What happens when a domain expires

You are renting, not buying

Registration grants the right to use a name for a fixed period, usually a year. After that you pay again. There is no equivalent of ownership here, only a subscription that lapses.

This is why the renewal fee matters more than the registration fee. In Poland the first year of a .pl name costs a fraction of every year that follows; in most of Western Europe the two prices are nearly identical. You keep a domain for years, and the promotion applies once.

Expiry has stages

Typically the domain stops working first, while you can still renew it normally. Then it enters a period where recovery is possible but costs several times more. Only at the end does the name return to the pool of free registrations.

How long each stage lasts is a decision of the registry. ICANN rules covering .com and .org do not apply to .pl, .de or .cz. If you want to know your deadline, read the policy of that specific extension rather than a guide written for the American market.

Names do not quietly become available

Valuable domains are monitored. The moment one returns to the pool, businesses specialising in catching expiring names submit registration requests, often within the same second.

The practical conclusion: if a name matters to you, do not plan on re-registering it after expiry. Recovering it from your own registrar, even with a penalty fee, is cheaper and far more certain than racing automated systems.

Three habits that prevent the loss

None of them requires technical knowledge.

• Keep a company mailbox on the domain record, not a personal one. A former employee inbox is the single most common reason names are lost.
• Check the payment card attached to auto-renewal once a year — cards expire quietly.
• Record the renewal date outside the registrar panel, with a reminder a month ahead.
