.com domains: Verisign as registry, ICANN as rulebook
.com is not an American domain, even though an American company runs it. It is a generic extension, and that has one practical consequence: it follows the shared ICANN rules rather than the policy of any single country.
Verisign keeps the registry, ICANN sets the rules
Verisign is responsible for the database and the operation of the .com zone. ICANN accredits registrars and sets the common rules — covering expiry, redemption periods and the procedure for disputes over names.
That is a meaningful difference from country domains. .pl follows NASK policy, .de follows DENIC policy, and each can look entirely different. With .com you get one rulebook, identical at every registrar in the world.
Higher to start, predictable afterwards
At a Polish registrar .com costs 53 PLN net to register and 66 PLN to renew (August 2026). The gap between the first year and the following ones is small — unlike .pl, where renewal is more than three times the opening price.
Priced over five years, a .com name can therefore work out cheaper than a country domain that looked far cheaper on day one.
When .com beats a country domain
When you operate in several countries, or do not yet know where the product will land. One global name is cheaper to keep than eight national ones and spares you from tracking eight separate policies.
When you sell locally, the advantage disappears. A customer in Poland remembers .pl more readily, and search engines read a country extension as a signal of connection to that market.
Checking availability
Verisign publishes RDAP, so answers are immediate and binding — better than relying on domain search tools whose results may be hours old.
Expect short, sensible words to have been taken years ago. A free .com today is usually a compound of two words or an invented one. If you want something short, a country extension is the more realistic place to look.
