.es domains: open registration, DNS-only checking
The Spanish extension is open — you do not need a Spanish address to register one. That makes it a natural choice for companies selling into Spain without setting up a business there.
Registry and rules
The .es registry is run by a Spanish public body, with registration handled through registrars. Names are usually registered directly beneath the extension, though additional namespaces exist for institutions and companies.
One of the cheaper Western European extensions
At a Polish registrar .es costs 46,80 PLN net to register and 49,20 PLN to renew (August 2026). Only .nl and .de come out lower; .fr is 65 PLN and .it 70 PLN.
The difference between the first year and the following ones is under three złoty, so the cost is predictable across a long horizon.
Availability cannot be confirmed through RDAP
The .es registry has no entry in the IANA RDAP bootstrap. Checking therefore falls back to DNS, which returns an indication rather than a fact: a name with no name servers looks the same whether it is free or merely unused.
For a name that matters, confirm with a registrar before you build anything around it.
Who it suits
A company genuinely selling in Spain, where the extension reads as a local address. For a service aimed at Latin America it is a weaker choice: .es is the domain of Spain, not of the Spanish language, and search engines read it that way.
There are namespaces here too
Beside names directly under .es, the registry operates spaces such as com.es, org.es and nom.es, plus restricted ones for public institutions and education. They work the way com.pl works in Poland: a separate registration, a separate fee, no automatic link to the short version.
Almost everyone registers the short form, which is why company.com.es is often free while company.es has been taken for years. That is a warning rather than an opportunity — visitors will type the short one.
