.fr domains: AFNIC and a price that stays flat

Who may register

AFNIC opened .fr to holders across the European Union and several associated states, not only to French residents. A company elsewhere in the EU can therefore hold a .fr address, provided the holder data meets the current requirements.

The condition applies for as long as you hold the domain, not only at registration — the same structure as .eu, and worth remembering if the company might move.

No jump after the first year

At a Polish registrar .fr costs 65 PLN net to register and the same to renew (August 2026). Five years therefore cost 325 PLN net, with no surprise in year two.

That flat pattern is normal in Western Europe: .nl renews at its registration price, .it likewise. Poland is the outlier here, not France.

Availability comes straight from the registry

AFNIC publishes an RDAP service, so an availability answer for .fr is authoritative — unlike .de, .it or .es, where only a DNS inference is possible.

Before you register

Check the current holder requirements on the AFNIC site and decide who inside the company will appear in the record. Then price the name across the years you actually expect to use it, which for a French market entry is rarely fewer than three.

The address is the easy part

French customers expect French. A .fr address above a page written in English, or in French translated word for word from English, reads as exactly what it is and undoes whatever trust the extension bought you.

The extension is also not the only signal that matters when one site serves several markets. Describe the relationship between your language versions with hreflang annotations, or search engines will decide for themselves which version to show a French visitor.
