An open registry with global sales

Registration is available to anyone, with no connection to Montenegro required. The operator is listed in the IANA root zone database and registrars around the world handle sales.

A flat fee, but not a small one

At a Polish registrar registration, renewal and transfer all cost 130 PLN net a year (August 2026). That is under twice a .pl name and far below .io at 460 PLN, yet still above every Western European country extension.

Availability is an inference here

The .me registry has no entry in the RDAP bootstrap, so checking falls back to DNS. A registered but unused name looks identical to a free one; confirmation comes from a registrar.

Where it genuinely works

Personal projects, portfolios and products whose name forms a phrase with the extension. In those cases the address is itself the message and people remember it after hearing it once.

For a company selling in one market it adds nothing: it signals no country, costs more than the local extension and needs explaining to customers.

The catch with a name that reads as a sentence

A phrase address works because the extension completes a word. That also means the name only makes sense in English, and only in writing. Read aloud in another language it collapses, which matters if your audience is not international.

There is a second catch. Phrases built on a brand you do not own — a product name plus .me — invite a dispute, and country registries handle disputes their own way rather than under the global procedure. Check the registry rules before building on somebody else’s word.
