.tv domains: Tuvalu, video, and a fee to match
.tv belongs to Tuvalu, a Pacific island nation for which two letters assigned decades ago by IANA became a major source of national income. Everyone else reads them as an abbreviation for television.
A small country, a large operator
Technical operation of the extension is handled by a company of global scale under an agreement with Tuvalu. As a result .tv runs on infrastructure comparable to the biggest generic domains, despite a home country of some thousands of residents.
Registration is open to anyone; no connection with Tuvalu is required.
What it costs
At a Polish registrar registration is 166,80 PLN net and renewal 168 PLN a year (August 2026) — more than twice a .pl name and roughly two and a half times a .com.
Five years come to about 840 PLN net. For a video service where the address is part of the brand, that can be justified. For an ordinary company website it is hard to argue for.
Availability checking is reliable
The .tv registry publishes RDAP, so answers come straight from its database. That is unusual among extensions used as industry branding — .io, .me and .co offer no such service.
Does it help in search
It does no harm and no good. Google treats .tv as a generic extension, so it points the site neither at Tuvalu nor at anywhere else. If you sell in one country, that country extension will do more for you and cost less.
Some names are priced as premium
Extensions used for branding tend to separate out a pool of attractive names — short words, category terms — and sell them well above the standard fee. .tv is one of them, so a single dictionary word can carry a price many times the ordinary one.
Neither DNS nor RDAP will tell you that. The domain shows as available, and the price appears only when a registrar quotes it. If a name looks surprisingly free for how good it is, expect a premium tag rather than luck.
